Lan Technologies, Wiring, Hardware Coaxial Cabled Based Ethernet: The first Ethernet that was studied was based on coaxial cable. The coaxial cable required “taps” or terminators that would mark the end of the coaxial cable. This is to prevent reflections or echo which is not desirable in an Ethernet. Coaxial based Ethernets are prone to cable failures. To overcome this disadvantage hub based were introduced. The maximum distance on a thin coax is 200 meters. Thick coax allows up to 500 meters. Hub Based Ethernet: Hub = Electronic device with ports. Also a hub is a layer 1 device, or a physical layer device. The ports are RJ45. A hub simulates the coax cable environment. I.E. what one computer sends al other computers hear. The connection medium from the computer to the hub is the twisted pair wire. 4 wires are used to transmit data. One pair of wires is used to send data, and the other pair is to receiver data. Hubs also act as a bit repeater. So when a machine sends a bit to the hub, the bit is repeated out on all ports except the port it came from so every machine can
