Religion 1005 CHAPTER 1 VOCABULARY BCE -an abbreviation meaning "before the common era"; in academic studies BCE is typically used for dates in place of BC (before Christ). CE - an abbreviation meaning "common era"; in academic studies CE is typically used for dates in place of AD (anno domini). Antiochus IV Epiphanes - the Seleucid (Greek) ruler who sought to exterminate the Jewish religion in the second century BCE by inflicting horrible atrocities upon anyone who professed or practiced the faith. Maccabees - Jewish rebels who led a successful revolt against Antiochus Epiphanes when he sought to exterminate the Jewish religion in the second century BCE. Hasmonean dynasty - rulers of an independent Jewish state set up by the Maccabees that lasted for about a century prior to conquest by the Roman empire in 63 BCE. Second Temple Judaism - a term often used to refer to the span of Jewish history from the building of the second temple during the Persian period (515 BCE) to the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70 CE. Pharisees - one of the major Jewish groups active during the Second Temple period; the Pharisees were largely associated with synagogues and most rabbis and many scribes were Pharisees. The Pharisees emphasized faithfulness to Torah, accepted as authoritative the oral tradition known as "the tradition of the elders," and believed laypeople should follow the same purity regulations in their daily lives as the priests serving in the temple. Mishnah - a collection of rabbinic discussions regarding interpretation of the law of Moses; the Mishnah forms one major part of the Jewish Talmud. Talmud - a collection of sixty-three books (including the Mishnah) that contain Jewish civil and canonical law based on interpretations of scripture. Torah - the law of Moses, as contained in the Pentateuch; or, frequently, a synonym for "Pentateuch" (referring, then, to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible). Sadducees - one of the major Jewish groups during the Second Temple period; the Sadducees were closely associated with the Temple in Jerusalem and, so, were concerned with maintaining the sacrificial system; most priests appear to have been Sadducees.
