Gutierrez 2compared to the states without capital punishment. The main objective of the death penalty is toreduce the number of serious crimes across the world such as murder. However, studies haveshown that this type of punishment has not had any positive impact on the reduction of capitalcrimes as initially postulated. Therefore, if the death penalty was effective in the reduction ofcapital crimes, then data would show otherwise among states implement the death penalty as adeterrence tool. Over the past ten years data shows that after all, the death penalty does not offeran effective solution in the prevention of certain crimes. The social costs of the death penaltyoutweigh the benefits given its role in the violation of human rights and the possibility of misusefor people seeking revenge.Deterrence is the main rationale for capital punishment in places where it is still practiced.The perspective is that understanding the threat of being executed in the future is enough toprevent several people from committing capital crimes which they had prior organized. However,one major concern over capital punishment is whether offenders will be dissuaded fromcommitting heinous crimes because of the threat of capital punishment rather than not imposing
