Urban hospitals are usually if not always teaching hospitals, whereas rural hospitals are not. In fact, the difference between urban and rural is determined by the accessibility to a higher education centre like a university. Erlanger is a non-profit, academic teaching center associated with the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine . Erlanger is also a Level-One Trauma Center for adults and the only provider of tertiary care services for the citizens of an entire four-state region, encompassing southeast Tennessee, north Georgia, north Alabama and western North Carolina. With a history that dates back more than a century, Erlanger is recognized as one of the nation's finest public hospitals and a leader in healthcare. In addition, urban hospitals usually have higher government grants and funding for research related work.

On the other hand, an urban centre will have more specialized floors and perhaps, more updated technology. There is greater cohesion and camaraderie amongst staff members of a small rural hospital. Memorial Healthcare System is a non-profit hospital located in Chattanooga, TN. It has 4 specialty units, including Adult and/or Pediatric Care, Coronary Care, Intensive Care, and Surgical Intensive Care. It is right there with Erlanger which has its government help facility. The only really government institute is the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute....
