Questions from last class: 1. Does the microtubule depolymerase enzyme use ATP to provide energy for depolymerization? Answer: The enzymes described so far do hydrolyze ATP but their exact roles in plus-end and minus end activities are not yet clear 2. Can some cancer cells ignore mitotic checkpoints? Answer: Yes. In fact, this may be the cause of some types of cancer: “One complex signaling pathway, termed the metaphase checkpoint (or the mitotic spindle checkpoint), promotes the equal segregation of chromosomes by blocking their separation at anaphase until all are properly aligned at the metaphase plate. Defects in this pathway during mitosis contribute to the development of cancer. In cancer cells, the metaphase checkpoint system is often faulty, leading to the generation of cells with too many or too few chromosomes. The resulting imbalances in gene dosage and the loss of normal gene alleles can generate aberrant cells with malignant and metastatic characteristics.” Dr. Gary G. Gorbsky
