Assignment: Reading Art Practicing Iconography In this work of art the artist; who is unknown, has assumed the traditional role of visual record but also may have assumed the second role of giving a visual or tangible form of philosophies or feelings. The roles are determined by the visualization of people and the expressed meaning in the painting. The art depicts a group of men possibly preparing for a ceremony of religious or war aspects. It is entitled “Emperor Justinian and his attendants; mosaic on the north wall of the Apse, church of San Vitale, Ravenna Italy. The artist used Iconography in the painting with the symbols of a shield (on the left), book (in the hands of a man to the right), incents (held on the lower right), bowl (held by the center gentleman), and head and foot-wear (worn also by the center gentleman). The painting was done in a mosaic medium in the period of medieval/Christian time. 1 In the second piece of art I chose, the artist Frank O. Gehry, assumes the traditional role of visual record but also assumes the fourth role of helping us see the world in a new and innovative way. The piece is entitled Guggenheim Museum; Bilbao, Spain, is dated 1993-1997. It is done in the medium “architecture”, and created in the period of the 20 th century. The traditional and fourth roles are determined by the visualization of a place (the Guggenheim museum) and the extreme new-age or innovative design of the building. Although the building is actual and really does exist; the extremeness of the design gives the idea of looking into the future thus assuming the fourth role of “helping us to see the world in a new and innovative way”.
