Kevin Cronin Scheme For Unknown 5A/B Possible Ions: i) Cations : Na + , K + , NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , Mg(H 2 O) 6 2+ , Al(H 2 O) 6 3+ ii) Anions: Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , HSO 4 - , OH - , CO 3 2- , HCO 3 2- iii) Possible Insoluble Compounds: Ca(OH) 2, CaSO 4 ∙ 2H 2 O, CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , Mg(OH) 2 Preparation before unknown analysis: i) Prepare Neutral water ii) Clean glassware iii) Get indicators, reagents, and litmus papers that you need to use during analysis Notes: 5A (the sample with the numerical label) is a pure salt, which means it only contains two (one cation and one anion) or three (alums, i.e. two cations and SO 4 2- ) ions. Time limitation for 5A/B is 120 minutes. For an alum, one of the two cations must be Al(H 2 O) 6 3+ , the other cation must be either K + or NH 4 + 1. Describe sample Phase, color, odor, crystal shape if crystalline, etc. 2. Test on original sample i) Flame test Bushy yellow orange → Na + (K + , NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , Mg(H 2 O) 6 2+ , Al(H 2 O) 6 3+ possible) Red or red orange → (No Na + , others possible) Purple → K + (No Na + or Ca 2+ , others possible) No Color → NH 4 + , Mg(H 2 O) 6 2+ , Al(H 2 O) 6 3+ (No Na + , Ca 2+ or K + ) Note: It is difficult to distinguish between the color for Na + and Ca 2+ ions using solid samples, if you are not sure what color sample you have, you can use the original solution you make, or the
