2.16.10 Department of Justice- Antitrust division is other agency that enforces mergers. Bureau of Economics- missions is consumer protection and antitrust. There focus is on the science and analysis. Their primary mission is to do research to make sure that the policies are as accurate as they can be. They actually participate in some of these cases. Office of Policy and Planning- The office gives information to other government agencies. The government sometimes decides one provider will be the sole provider of a certain good or service. Office of Congressional Relations- Office of the General Counsel- take companies to court if they are found to be in violation of the FTC. They are the legal part of the FTC. The FTC does not only answer to congress but also to the Supreme Court, so the General Counsel has to give expertise to the FTC. Structure Monopoly o Structural relief, break-up firms into smaller entities, if found to be a monopoly o Prevent/deter certain types of conduct o Mergers- are all mergers bad for society? Sometimes good for society, sometimes bad for society
