Abstract The article stresses the influence that social role valorization has on the overall community, and more specifically, the disabled. While the authors discuss many of the benefits of social role valorization, which is the reformulated model of normalization, they also discuss different issues and approaches that can improve the study of these issues, and in turn, improve the lives of the disabled. There are many issues that are brought up throughout the article. The central issue seems to be the different approaches to defining the term “normal”, and its different definitions in regard to the individual and society. Understanding an individual’s cultural value, allows one to understand the different perspectives used to define the term “normal,” which the article shows to mean that social role valorization should be connected with cultural reciprocity.
