1. (40 points) Consider an optically pumped laser system as depicted in the diagram below. (a) Assuming that the pumping does not significantly deplete N 0 (N 0 is constant), write the rate equations for N 1 and N 2 in terms of the pump rate R and the laser intensity I ν (which is tuned to the 2-1 transition).
