Social norms how people define others as deviant, The Functions of Deviance: Structural – Functional Analysis – Durkheim thought deviance affirmed social and cultural norms. 1. Affirms values and norms a. People preferred some attitudes, and you needed vice to have virtue 2. Clarifies moral boundaries a. Deviant behavior is emphasized as such and helps people define right from wrong 3. Bonds people together a. People usually react to large-scale deviance by helping each other. 4.
