Deviance Crime – any action that breaks a law Social Control – laws and social norms Criminal Justice System – formal response to alleged violations of the law Lombroso’s Theory of Biological Deviance – some people are genetically predisposed to being criminals. Therefore, criminals are less evolved humans. Little can be done to cure natural born criminals because it’s genetic. It was discredited for a time, but now sociopaths are proven to have different brain patterns than non-sociopaths. Personality Factors Reckless and Dinitz’s containment theory Strong moral standards and positive self-image can stop boys from becoming delinquents. Social Foundation of Deviance – something went wrong to cause deviance Deviance varies according to cultural norms. Social norms how people define others as deviant, The Functions of Deviance: Structural – Functional Analysis – Durkheim thought deviance affirmed social and cultural norms. 1. Affirms values and norms a. People preferred some attitudes, and you needed vice to have virtue 2. Clarifies moral boundaries a. Deviant behavior is emphasized as such and helps people define right from wrong 3. Bonds people together a. People usually react to large-scale deviance by helping each other.
