Lesson 24 – Signals II (Section 54, 56 and 57) (CLOs 51 and 53)
This is the second lesson of a threelesson block on signals.
The first lesson was on Singularity functions and
exponentials. This one is on sinusoids and partial descriptors (V

skip over
Section 55 and include it with Section 57.
Sinusoids
The students should already know how to define a sinusoid from Trig and Calculus but we will reinforce
that knowledge.
We will show them how to write sinusoids in both rectangular and polar forms – and how
to convert from one form to another.
The importance of sinusoids not only the fact that it is the form in
which most of our power comes, but that it is at the
heart of the study of Phasors and Filters.
Begin by telling the students that there are infinite
types of signals that are processed.
Obviously, we
cannot study them all.
However, a few key signals tell
us a lot about how that circuit operates.
Singularity
functions, on one hand, tell us about the transient
behavior of circuits – how circuits behave when they
are switched on or off or how they behave when
processing digital signals.
Sinusoids, on the other
hand, tell us how about the frequency behavior of
circuits – important in communications, audio and
power applications.
We already looked a singularity
functions now we will look at sinusoids.
Suggest starting by drawing the sinusoid waveform above, but do NOT place a vertical axis.
