Starting the Computer Cold booting – powering up a computer on for the first time Warm boot – computer offers restarting while it is already running Computer has to know it’s you (username and password) Computer then authenticates use by requiring them to login and load the user’s profile There are 3 things to authenticate: Weak password (all lowercase) Strong password (upper case, lower case, number, special mark) Pass phrase (ex. I Like Bunnies!) Memory Management Computer makes sure it has enough space or resources Device Drivers Driver is just a program (printer, scanner, etc.) Interfacing and Utilities Input and output User interface – what the user sees on the monitor Desktop – graphical user interface, the background display (screen), icons, etc. File Management Systems File name – A legitimate file name has to have its entire path Modification date – when was the file last accessed? Antivirus
