Corey Cohen Lawrence 9/28/08 Assignment #1 1. a. McCain’s choice of Palin will serve to increase the activity of the conservative base, thereby increasing the chances of his being elected President. This is a better social science hypothesis because it states in what direction Palin will have an effect on McCain’s chances so that it is testable. Furthermore, it emphasizes why Palin will have an effect on McCain being elected. This permits for the testing of the hypothesis, as a causal relationship is established. b. The effectiveness of counterinsurgency in measures in Iraq depends on the United States’ ability to educate the Iraqis about democracy. “Heart and minds” does not have an operational definition. It is far too ambiguous to be tested. The social science hypothesis above is better since it can be tested and generalized. By studying Iraq and drawing conclusions on the impact of educating the citizenry about democracy, one is able to generalize it to include other possible situations. Furthermore, education levels can be tested by variables like literacy rates. c. An increase in foreign aid to African countries will lead to greater GDP growth and stability than when aid is held constant or decreased. There is no to decide what exactly “developed” means in the original. The new hypothesis provides for the possibility of empirical observation. 2.
