What is Really Real? (pp.409- 412) Metaphysics deals with questions of ultimate reality. What is truly real? Is it "ideas" or is it "matter" (ultimate bits of sub-atomic particles) or is it "energy"? Chief part of metaphysics is ontology which deals with the following issues: a) the kind of things that exist; b) the definition of different kinds of being; c) what is ultimately real. Materialism is the metaphysical theory that matter is truly real and immaterial things are not. (Matter is what we can sense; they are spatial. Immaterial things are "ideas" or "souls" or non-spatial things (like perhaps, "God")). (Ex: Marx was a materialist) Idealism in contrast asserts that ideas (thoughts, concepts, minds) are what are ultimately real. (Ex: Plato was an idealist). Monism: Any metaphysical theory which holds that there is a single reality (This single reality can be either mind or matter). Dualism: Any theory which holds that reality is both material and immaterial. Note: A theory can be materialist AND either monist or dualist. Similarly a theory can be idealist AND either monist or dualist. For example: Plato was an idealist dualist - which means for him "ideas" are ultimately real, even though he argued that reality can be both material and immaterial (with the latter being more real than the former). We will see how his theory works itself out when we study the "divided line." Pluralism: Theory that many different real things. Plato:
