CEE 3040  -  Uncertainty Analysis in Engineering Homework #5 Due:   Weds, September 29, 2010.     LONG assignment.  Start early.   ActivStats is RECOMMENDED  but  OPTIONAL (i.e. no points awarded) Read:   Devore 5.1-5.3, 5.5;  handouts  on conditional pdf's & moment analysis. Moment analysis discussed in Devore7, p. 182 #124-25; p. 226 # 93-94. and in Lecture Notes #13.   [Devore6, p. 203 #118-119; p. 252 # 93-94] Goal:    First problems exercise new and powerful concepts related to joint distributions of  several random variables. You have now seen a number of examples of random variables and  should know how to use this mathematical machinery.  Problems Q2 and Q3 show what you  can now do with approximate moment analyses. This is how uncertainty analysis is done! Q4  focuses on issues that can be confusing. Assignment ActivStats   (OPTIONAL this week)  lessons related to  Central Limit Theorem,  Lec. #15.   The Central Limit Theorem is really remarkable. Please consider the following exercises (a) Page 16-1, second lesson: “simulate sampling distributions….” (b) Page 16-2, lesson one: “Simulate the sampling distribution of the mean.”  (c) Page 16-3, lesson one: “Learn about the central limit theorem… ”.   n = # of observations per batch  Change n and see how the number of sliders changes.  Try n = 1 to get the original distribution. Batch = # of means computed at one time.  1
