CHAPTER 8 GROUP AND TEAM BEHAVIOR WHY FORM GROUPS? -Satisfy individual needs, such as security, relationships -Work closely or have similar characteristics -Common goals -Economics – eg. Group insurance TYPES -formal – command (direct reports) and task group/team -informal – interest/friendship STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT (Tuckman) -Forming – uncertainty; testing the waters -Storming – conflict; develop hierarchy -Norming – defining correct member behavior -Performing – group energy to complete task at hand; synergy -Adjourning – wrapping up -punctuated-equilibrium model – transition at half-way point to meet deadline -group decay – work group reaches “performing” stage then shifts into reverse -de-norming (see also below) – erosion of standards -de-storming – growing discontent and loss of cohesiveness -de-forming – fragmentation and breakup of group GROUP STRUCTURE -roles -role identity – attitudes and behaviors consistent with role; can shift
