CHAPTER 2 ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE -Basic assumptions/perceptions about an organization:  beliefs, values, expectations -Schein’s three layers – like iceberg theory: some you see/some you don’t -Layer I – artifacts and creations -Layer II – values; what’s important to people -Layer III – assumptions/perceptions that guide behavior VALUES -Desires/wants that guide individual behavior; must be shared to be efficient and effective in organization or  society. -Milton Rokeach values:  terminal (ends to be achieved) vs. instrumental (means to get there) -Allport values:  theoretical (discovery of truth); economic (wealth); aesthetic (beauty/harmony); social; political;  religious -Meglino values:  achievement; helping and concern for others; honesty; fairness  -value congruence – aligning values with others DEVELOPING CULTURE -H  history – traditions, rituals -O  oneness – common values -M  membership – empowered; a part of something bigger -E  exchange – interactive communication; participation
