CHAPTER 3 (cont.) GLOBALIZATION  addendum – international ethics Ethical continuum: -Ethical relativism -“When in Rome, do what the Romans do” – adopt ethics of country in which doing  business -No internationally acceptable standards of right and wrong -Guiding Principles of global ethics (Donaldson) -show respect for core human values -demonstrate sensitivity to local traditions -recognize that context matters when distinguishing between right and wrong -Ethical imperialism (think “ethnocentrism”) -what is different may be considered wrong -ethical standards of one’s own country are most important Ethical issues in international business -employment practices -establish minimal acceptable standards that safeguard basic rights of employees -audit foreign subsidiaries/subcontractors on a regular basis to ensure compliance -take corrective action if they are not in compliance -human rights, such as South Africa and China
