4. Skeletal muscle Muscle always pulls, pushing is from joints I. Anatomy a. muscle myofiber myofilaments i. Muscle- all multinucleated ii. Myofiber- stretches the length of the muscle iii. NMJ fiber- myofibril 1. Z-lines anchor myosin, actin and titin 2. Sarcomere is the region from z-line to z-line 3. Titin attaches myosin to z-line 4. H-band is the length of the myosin 5. I-band is length of actin 6. A-band is myosin+ myosin/actin overlap iv. Striated muscle- dark with light through muscle b. Myofilaments i. Actin- proties 1. Chain of g-actin sub-units 2. Contains myosin binding sites ii. Tropomyosin- protein chain 1. Lies along Actin covering binding sites iii. Troponin-C 1. Ca++ binding site 2. With Ca++ troponin-C pulls Tropomyosin from actin to uncover myosin binding sites iv. Myosin 1. Subunits- tail, hinge, double heads 2. Hinge is used to get close to actin 3. The double head binds to actin 4. Myosin uses ATPase activity 5. No heads in the middle II. Mechanism of contraction
