INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY CLASS NOTES DECEMBER 6 TH , 2007 Family – “Family” in American society is a symbol, a visual image that speaks to us through the senses. o Including smells, tastes, textures, motions, and sounds from our own remembered experiences, as well as through our dreams and longings about what family should be. o For roughly the last 150 years until 1960, most Americans shared a common set of beliefs about family life; family should consist of a husband and wife living together with their children. o The father should be the head of the family, earn the income, and give his name to his wife and children. The mother’s main task was to support her husband’s career and guide the children, look after the home and set a moral tone for the family. Nuclear Family – Consists of mother, father, and children. Now its just an idea or model we have about families. Traditional Family
