INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY CLASS NOTES NOVEMBER 13 th , 2007 Deviance – Goes against the norms or values of the society you live in or subcultures of the society. o Deviance can be negative or positive according to the group you live in. o Deviance is defined as behavior, beliefs, or conditions that are viewed by powerful segments of society as serious violations of important norms. Four Characteristics of Deviance: o 1.) Relative: varies from one culture to another. How we react. o 2.) Audience is very important: front stage and back stage; are you conforming/place your doing the behavior. o 3.) Deviance is historical or time limited; against the law for a woman to show her ankles. o 4.) Depends on the actor: same behavior can be deviant depending on who is doing the behavior (white vs. black comedy). With deviance: o Age is important. o Gender is important. o Race/ethnicity is important. How society keeps us under control (cuts down on deviance):
