1. Identify the cultural issues present in ECL China. Describe ECL's strategy for managing cultural differences. Do you agree or disagree with their strategy? Why? There are many cultural issues facing ECL China. The first is the qualities of obedience and humility among the Chinese workers. Whereas the Chinese workers surely see this as proper workplace etiquette, many Americans may view these qualities as a lack of being proactive or even laziness. This would be especially true for those expatriates who aren’t provided the correct cross-cultural training before arriving in China. Next, the difference in communication styles between the Chinese and American workers is a pretty serious cultural issue. The direct communication style exhibited by the American workers can be misinterpreted by the Chinese workers, which could have devastating effects for ECL if not handled properly. We, as Americans tend to use criticism as a corrective action in the workplace, but Chinese workers aren’t accustomed to this and may think that this criticism is disrespectful and embarrassing. This too would be a major issue for expatriates sent to work at ECL China without proper training. The lack of teamwork capability is another cultural issue present in ECL China.
