Michael Samuels 10/7/08 SMPA 110W Doyle Campus Security Near the end of the 2007-2008 academic year the question of arming university police officers with guns began circulating around campus. Recent violent occurrences at several major universities, including Virginia Tech University and Northern Illinois University, have stirred a new controversy on the George Washington University Campus. A mass murder took place on both the VT and NIU campuses last year by a student at the respective university. The issue, first presented by the GW Hatchet, the local college grounds newspaper, sparked a campus wide debate regarding questions discussing issues of safety and the responsibility of the UPD officers. “I honestly don’t trust them with weapons of any kind, let alone guns.” Said sophomore Zach Zagoory “Their primary job is to protect students from themselves such as sending drunk kids to the hospital or bust people smoking in their rooms. Hell last week I called them to open the door to my room because I locked myself out.” There have been no incidents of serious violent crime over the past few years.
