Michael Samuels 12/9/08 SMPA 110W Doyle News Business In the wake of the Tribune Company’s recent bankruptcy filing the news industry lays in awe of what this might mean for the future of the industry. News is compromised of many different topics including: day to day breaking news, business, entertainment, and sports amongst many others. The sports industry could perhaps be the most interesting case of all the areas of news. With the growing blog industry and the apparent stranglehold ESPN has on all things sports. Jay Mariotti, a much maligned ex-sports writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, was quoted saying “To see what has happened in this business. … I don’t want to go down with it.” Mariotti was referring to print journalism. Beyond his antics, the point he makes cannot be dismissed. The most widespread source for sports information is espn.com, owned by the Disney Corporation. ESPN also publishes a once a week magazine, but with the growing popularity of the internet, sales have gone down while subscriptions to
