Michael Samuels 11/20/08 SMPA 110W Doyle Marc Sandalow Nancy Pelosi became the first female to be elected to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 110 th U.S. Congress. Pelosi’s rise through the ranks of Congress was detailed in a biography of her life entitled Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi’s Life, Times, and Rise to Power. Marc Sandalow, a nationally recognized journalist from the San Francisco Chronicle and resident of Pelosi’s congressional district, took on the task of writing the biography. Sandalow, who had written over a 100 stories about Pelosi, was chosen because of his extensive knowledge and relationship with her. He claimed however that his harshest critic was perhaps Pelosi herself. Sandalow stated “Pelosi didn't want anyone writing a book about her, besides herself” In spite of the relationship they had fostered over Sandalow’s 21 years at the Chronicle, Pelosi refused to cooperate and in his words was “a real pain in the ass” throughout the entire process.
