Digestion Study Guide [1] 1. Describe the basic structure of the gastrointestinal tract wall. Understand the properties and functions of the different layers. 2. What is the function of M-cells and why are they important to medicine? 3. What are the structures and functions of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract? 4. Describe the accessory organs of the digestive tract, their locations and what they secrete into the lumen of the intestine. 5. You take a bite of a hamburger, including the bun, the meat and some vegetables (with vitamins). Describe the path of that bite as it moves through your entire digestive system (be detailed and specific). Describe where and how the components of the bite are digested and absorbed into your blood. 6. Describe the circulation of the gastrointestinal tract. How do nutrients get from the lumen of the intestine to general circulation? 7. Where is lactoferrin secreted and what does it do?
