Objectives and Study Guide: The Peripheral Nervous System Overall aim: to understand the general structure of the brain and the spinal cord and to understand the structure and function of the Autonomic Nervous Division and the Somatic Motor Division Specific objectives: 1. Define the Nervous System, the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System List the 4 main functions of the Nervous System. 2. Describe the composition of a Reflex Pathway 3. Define cranial nerves and spinal nerves 4. List and describe the components of a cross-section of the spinal cord. 5. List the 4 major regions of the spinal cord. 6. What is a dermatome? A myotome? 7. Describe the functional arrangement of sensory, motor and autonomic nuclei within the spinal cord (what makes up the grey matter? the white matter?). 8. Define ascending and descending tracts 9. Explain how one side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body. 10. List the 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex and name their specific primary functions
