Three Basic Varieties of Neurons Sensory Neurons Carry “info” from sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) to the central nervous system Motor Neurons Carry “messages” out from the central nervous system, through nerves, to muscles and glands Interneurons Exist entirely within the central nervous system and carry messages from one set of neurons to another Make sense of the input from sensory neurons, generate our mental experiences, and coordinate behavior with motor neurons

How do neurons “send” messages? Neurons are either in a state of rest or a state of firing At rest, neurons carry a negative electrical potential (called its resting potential) When excited, potassium channels in the cell membrane open, thus allowing positively charged potassium ions to enter and create a positive charge This wave of change in the electrical charge of the cell is called an action potential
