What is Personality? A general or typical style of interacting with and reacting to one’s environment, especially other people in that environment This general or typical style is fairly consistent across situations According to Trait Theories of Personality, this general or typical style can be characterized by certain core traits

What is a Trait Defn: Traits can be thought of as an enduring attribute of someone that indicates the likelihood of behaving, thinking, or feeling a certain way Example: Someone who is relatively high on the trait of Aggressiveness is, across situations, more likely to: Become physically or verbally aggressive (behaviors), Perceive and interpret the social environment as threatening and adversarial and to make judgments and decisions that are aggressive toward others (cognitions) Experience feelings of anger, hostility and justified rage (emotions)

Traits Traits are Continuous rather than Categorical aspects of personality This means that people differ in the degree to which they are, for example, aggressive There are no “all-or-none” aspects of personality

How many Traits are there? Gordon Allport identified 18,000 personality descriptors in the English language Factor Analysis studies have looked at those sets of traits (or “factors”) that seem to cluster together and that are independent of other clusters Based on data from 100’s of studies, there seem to be 5 relatively independent trait factors that comprise any individual’s Personality
