Structure of Mental Health Treatment Mental Health treatment is significantly different from even the near past: In Europe and the US through the 1700’s, mental disorders were often explained religiously “treatment” centers more like jails than hospitals In the US, social reformer Dorothea Dix led the moral treatment movement and started the asylum system, a state- run center of care and protection Most asylum patients would live there permanently, and it was more of a micro-society than a hospital Up until the 1950’s, an “inpatient” model was the norm, and “separation” rather than “integration” was the ethic

Modern Mental Health Treatment Now, mental health treatment follows multiple different models, but many employ some combination of psychotherapy , drug therapy, and community outreach Outpatient treatment and “integration” over “separation” are the primary goals
