Vitamin D “the sunshine vitamin” Body can synthesize all of it’s needs via sunlight In a sense it is not essential nutrient in our diet Adequate time in the sun and body can synthesize all  required vitamin D Our body has inactive vitamin D via diet and  sunlight Activated to active vitamin D in kidneys and liver Recent studies show more people vitamin D  deficient than initially thought 1/3 rd  of young adults

Vitamin D and Blood Calcium Calcium essential to many physiologic functions Muscle contraction Nerve Function Glandular functioning As blood calcium falls, vitamin D acts on 3 places  in increase Ca concentration in blood Small intestine – Vitamin D signals intestine to absorb  higher percentage of calcium in diet Kidneys – Vitamin D tells kidneys to conserve calcium  and excrete less in the urine Bone – Vitamin D can work to resorb calcium from  bones
