AES 151 Diaspora Essay #1 Today’s focus is on the emigration of ethnic groups to the Americas, particularly to Africans (and Caribbean groups) and their long history of oppression and combating racism and inequality. Africans coming to the Americas is an example of Diaspora. But, it’s not difficult to know that the majority of Africans who came, were forced to leave their homes, families and lives, and were shipped off to a place they never realized that it ever existed. They were stripped from their society and thrown in slave ships, as though they were animals shoved into a cold, iron cage. The Middle Passage alone was a gruesome journey in it by itself. The Africans reached to the Americas after a horrific and long boat ride filled with diseases, deaths, cramped spaces, violence and beatings,. Sadly, this is when the worse comes. The racism and oppression African slaves went through for years and years kept them down physically and mentally. Some didn’t have their families for comfort, and they weren’t allowed to bring or even share their culture
