HUEC 4011 Fall 2010 Take Home Assignment – Reimbursement for MNT 1. Become familiar with the issue of reimbursement for MNT using the resources on the course web site under “Course Documents” and the web site of the American Dietetic Association ( www.eatright.org/mnt ). 2. Briefly describe the law that legislated reimbursement for MNT. - The law that legislated the reimbursement for MNT was the Medicare Modernization Act. In 1999, it was recommended by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy that MNT be a covered benefit under Medicare, with a physician’s referral. The benefits were passed and put into practice in 2002. In 2003, the benefits were enhanced, but were still limited to diabetes and renal disease, with the exception of patients already on dialysis. Today, Medicare Part B covers MNT, when ordered by a physician. This includes nutrition assessments, counseling and follow-ups. All new Medicare patients get an initial assessment. This is used as a preventative for disease and must be completed
