Diabetes Mellitus MNT Goals Type II – NIDDM Keep these at normal levels: a) HbA1c b) Blood pressure c) Cholesterol – normal lipid values; 2 x more likely to die of heart attack Goals: prevent complications - Renal dx and dialysis - Poor circulation and nerve damage - Retinopathy (eye damage) - < immunity Prevent complication: normalize blood glucose Hypoglycemia low blood sugar; insulin < blood glucose; too much insulin Blood pressure: systemic < 300 diastolic < 80 Lipid goals: Total cholesterol <200 LDL <100 HDL >45 (men) >55 (women) TG <150 Type I – Insulin Dependent - short acting (30 – 45 min. to act) - intermediate (2-4hrs) - pre-mixed 70/30, 50/50 - alcohol lowers blood glucose; counts as fat in exchange
