Emotional Abuse and Neglect ¨ Definition: Abuse § Rejecting - Withholding affection - Constant criticism - Yelling or swearing at the child § Ignoring - Failure to respond to the child’s need for stimulation, nurturance, encouragement, and protection § Isolating - Preventing the child from normal social contact with other children and adults - Leaving the child unattended for long periods § Terrorizing - Threatening the child (extreme punishment, abandonment, etc) - Beating family members in front of or in ear range of child - Inconsistent demands on the child - Displaying inconsistent emotions § Exploitation - Encouraging destructive, illegal, or antisocial behavior - Child expected to be ‘caregiver’ to the parent - Young child expected to take care of younger siblings § Spousal abuse in the child’s presence § Allowing a child to use drugs or alcohol § Description of a relationship between the parent and child, rather than specific events ¨ Statistics § 58% of child maltreatment was child neglect
