Packages and Java Archive Files Definitions Package A package is a logical grouping of classes. Jar A JAR is a Java Archive file in compressed format that consists of a group of classes, packages, and multimedia files that are part of an application or applet. Used to distribute applications Packages Group classes into packages Categorize classes into logical groupings and make a package for each group Build packages that contain sets of classes designed to be used together Collect classes together for convenient distribution Packages can be grouped into subpackages Common groupings An application can be a single package and/or multiple sub-packages Create a package for an application and have a sub package for each tier of the application. A sub-package for UI classes A sub-package for PD classes A sub-package for DA classes A sub-package for Servlet classes A package corresponds to a folder. The folder must have the same name as the package. Example: To create a package called Battleship: create a folder called battleship. Place the source files into the folder and compile with the package name.
