Axia College Material Appendix D Critical Analysis Forms Fill out one form for each source. Source 1 Title and Citation: Nuclear Deterrence Should Not Be Used to Prevent Biological Warfare Source Citation: Graham, Thomas, Jr. “Nuclear Deterrence Should Not Be Used to Prevent Biological Warfare.” Opposi Press, 2004. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center . Gale. Apollo Library. 11 May. 2008 < http://find.galegroup.com/ovr 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. Should the United States threaten the use of nuclear arms against any nation that attempts to attack it using nuclear arms, even though we have signed a treaty stating we would not use nuclear weapons against non- nuclear states? 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. The author does seem to have a bias against the U.S. using or threatening to use nuclear weapons to deter a biological threat. “The United States should instead utilize its significant conventional military assets to deter other nations from waging biological warfare.”” If the United States does not live up to the bargain it made in the context of NPT extension, the half-dozen nuclear proliferation threats of today could become many more tomorrow.” 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I don’t find any ambiguity or vagueness in the article. The author explains the subjects in the article in precise detail. I do not find any instances where a word has more than one meaning. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. Yes, I do find the author credible. The author’s claim doesn’t conflict with my own person observations, or background information. The author’s claims source is the president of Lawyers Alliance for World Security. The author seems to provide truth, objectivity, and accuracy in his report. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I sense a hint of slippery slope in this statement, “Further if the United States were to argue, for example, that we need nuclear weapons to offset Iraq's biological weapons why couldn't Iran (or any other state) make the same argument? 6 Identify and name any fallacies used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. Possible scare tactics approach, “However, to threaten retaliation with nuclear weapons would only encourage countries who are threatened by chemical or biological weapons to seek their own nuclear weapon capability.” If we were to threaten, other countries would get their own nuclear weapons to counter ours. 7
