Shown below is a step-index optical fiber, consisting of a core with refractive index n 1 and a cladding with a smaller refractive index n 2 . The numerical aperture (NA) of an optical fiber is the sine of the maximum angle φ of an incident ray with respect to the fiber axis such that the transmitted beam is guided in the core. φ (a) Derive an expression for the NA=sin φ of a step index fiber, in terms of n 1 and n 2 .
