Physics 214 Assignment 9 Concepts: Snell's law Energy and momentum in EM waves Total internal reflection Geometric optics Two source interference Reading: Y&F, Vol. 2, Chapters 32, 33, 34 and 35 Assignment: Due in lecture on Thursday, April 3. Please turn in this sheet stapled to the top of your work. Physics Problems: 1. Y&F, Chapter 33, Exercise 33.16 2. Y&F, Chapter 33, Problem 33.53 3. Shown below is a step-index optical fiber, consisting of a core with refractive index n 1 and a cladding with a smaller refractive index n 2 . The numerical aperture (NA) of an optical fiber is the sine of the maximum angle φ of an incident ray with respect to the fiber axis such that the transmitted beam is guided in the core. φ (a) Derive an expression for the NA=sin φ of a step index fiber, in terms of n 1 and n 2 . (b) For a typical n 1 =1.47 and n 2 =1.45, what are φ and NA? 4. Y&F Chapter 32, Problem 32.39 5. Y&F Chapter 32, Problem 32.51 6. In Lecture 18, we discussed two source interference.
