Pei-yu Hung Hung 1 Ms. Thorn American Literature May 11 2009 Characteristics of a Character In a story or a novel, there are many literary devices or rhetoric that help the plot attract the readers. In a story, besides those elements, characters are the most important. Without characters, the readers could not understand the point of a story. The readers will not comprehend the conversations or dialogs without characters. Also, characters transmit the messages of the story to the readers that the readers could get the information through the characters’ thought and positions. In Winter Dreams , Fitzgerald established some unique characters to illustrate the story through his conception of human and the relationship between men and women. One of the characters is Judy Jones, Fitzgerald established her personality as a proud and ungovernable woman, and also she is pretty as a fairy that all men were crazy about her. In Winter Dreams , Fitzgerald describes Judy Jones’ personality using her actions and motivations to emphasize the characteristic of this character. At the beginning, Fitzgerald first illustrated Judy’s appearance with exaggerated embellishment when she was only eleven. She is “beautiful ugly as little girls are apt to be who are destined after a few years to be inexpressibly lovely and bring no end of misery to a great number of men—Heaven help us!—in the almost passionate quality of her eyes” (Fitzgerald 2). Through these words, Fitzgerald wants to emphasize that Judy is
