Dhaval Rana OUTLINE A stereotype is a preconceived idea that attributes certain characteristics to all the members of class or set. The term is often used with a negative connotation when referring to an oversimplified, exaggerated, or demeaning assumption that a particular individual possesses the characteristics associated with the class due to his or her membership in it. Stereotypes can be used to deny individuals respect or legitimacy based on their membership in that group. In the novel, Brave New World , by Aldous Huxley there are many forms of stereotypes. For example, Brave New World, was designed so that everyone may fit in. however, Bernard fails to fit in because of his inferior physical stature, which goes against the idea that everyone who lives in the “Brave New World” is happy. Stereotypes have been a issue in society for nearly centuries. Many races such as Asians, African Americans, Native Americans, Muslims, and Italians have been victims of stereotypes in today’s society. Events such as nine eleven, high accident rates with Asians, and high crime rates relating with African Americans are responsible for stimulating the rise of these stereotypes. Body I Nine-eleven was a series of attacks on America by Al-Qaeda. It greatly affected the Muslim race. It lead to the rise of many stereotypes, which changed the way people viewed Muslims. A. What was 9 11? The September 11 attacks a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001. On that morning, 19 Islamist terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Every since 9.11 many innocent Muslims were put on high watch throughout airports and where search numerous times just because of their race. B. Studies at University of Illinois that found that the earnings of Muslim’s and ethnically Arab working in USA dropped about 10 percent since 9 11. (Ghazali) C. This proves that many stereotypes can be misleading and false. (Ghazali) D. In brave new world everyone’s life was perfect and happy. However, Bernard was not making that statement false.
