Mark Jones P a g e | 1 HIST 114-49Y Week 6 – 2 nd New Deal Essay The Second New Deal In June of 1935, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) launched what historians called the Second New Deal. Some of the reasons for this launch was because of existing laws that had failed to end Depression, extremists luring away some of Roosevelt’s supporters, and voters that were heartened by the partial success of early New Deal measures, despite the Supreme Court declaration that many New Deal Measures were unconstitutional. [Carnes and Garraty] The Second New Deal was characterized by reform . Members of Congress and others called for fundamental reform of society, not just relief of the symptoms of social and economic problems. [US.History] Some of the main features of the Second New Deal were the National Labor Relations Act, commonly known as the Wagner Act, the Wealth Tax Act and the Social Security Act. These reform measures also signified FDR’s tentative step toward the “left”. [US.History] The National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act) gave workers the right to bargain
