11/19/19 Personal Sexual Ideology MarkunasI have always had an interest in learning why people think and act the way they do. Sexuality is one of the more taboo facets of human behavior, making me all the more curious about it. When deciding to take this class I expected to be reading a lot of information and discussing it in a very factual manner. I have always had a very open-minded perspective on sexuality, but I did not realize how much having extremely personal discussions with my classmates would broaden my understanding.In the initial survey, I answered the question, “What do you think are the outside influences that have most strongly impacted your viewpoints on sexuality?” by discussing the different forms of media- movies, television, Instagram, etc., that I believe have affected my views. I still believe that the kinds of depictions of romantic and sexual relationships between younger people that exist in movies and TV can be harmful because they portray increasingly younger female characters as sexy, entering relationships and advancing sexually sooner, and having less healthy relationships than I believe should be encouraged for vulnerable young viewers. I cited this as the largest influence on my viewpoint and added my upbringing by two people who believed that everything was natural and nothing was taboo. Because of the information gained in this class, I now believe that the latter has been what has shaped me the most in regards to my understanding of sexuality. While I did not receive an extraordinary sex education in school, I knew that it was more than was given to students in more conservative parts of the country. My parents were extremely
open with me and my siblings about every facet of sexuality, ensuring from a young age we werefamiliar everything from the names and functions of our anatomy, to the concept of consent, to the idea that whatever our sexual orientation ended up being was perfectly fine.
