50 ATTERBERG LIMITS (ASTM 4318) Atterberg Limit Tests are a series of tests that determine the liquid, plastic, and shrinkage limits of a fine-grained soil. They are performed on the fractions of a soil finer than the No. 40 sieve. Separation, if necessary, of the coarser portions may be carried out by dry sieving. to determine the following for the soil given to you: 1) Liquid Limit 2) Plastic Limit 3) Plasticity Index (LL &PL) 4) USCS classification Remember to describe possible sources of error in the testing procedure. Atterberg Limits - The ±limits of consistency² of a soil as defined by water contents. Slurry consistency Liquid _____ Liquid Limit & the lower limit of viscous flow Increasing Plastic _____ Plastic Limit & he lower limit of the plastic state moisture content Semisolid Shrinkage Limit & the lower limit of volume change & rarely done, involves using Mercury in test Solid Dry Soil Liquid Limit - The water content at which a groove cut in a soil sample closes in 25 taps when tested in a liquid limit device. This occurs at a shear strength of approximately 2.5 KPa (shear strength as water content) (Casagrande, 1932). Try to run the Liquid Limit test from ³dry to wet´. Plastic Limit - The water content at which a soil begins to crumble when rolled by hand into 1/8² diameter threads. Run the test from wet to dry. The soil dries as we work it with our hands. Use the palm of your hand when rolling out the treads.
