9.5 Polymerization Through Ring-opening Ring-opening polymerization provides an alternative route to prepare polycondensation polymers. the reaction involves cyclic monomers, such as cyclic ethers, acetals, ester, amides and siloxanes. In ring-opening polymerization, there is no problems of stoichiometry and by-product remova which are the major concerns in step-growth process. The overall rate of polymerization in ring-opening polymerization is larger than that of step-growth polymerization by more than an order of magnitude. Nylon 6 -aminocaproic acid
