Unformatted text preview: Cell Biology, the Biochemistry of Life Processes, Genetics Welcome to MCDB 1A MCDB 1A and 1AL Course Information Summer 2010 MCDB 1A The MCDB 1A lectures this quarter will be an introduction to: Section A = Cell Biology/Principles of Early Development Section B = Biochemistry / Molecular Biology Section C = Genetics Dr. Seng Hui Low (LSB, Rm 2111, shlow@lifesci.ucsb.edu) The lab coordinator is Sergiu Leu (2219 BSIF, leu@lifesci .ucsb.edu ). If you are still trying to enroll in the 1AL labs, Sergiu will begin the waitlist on Mon Jun 21st. See him after lecture in the back if you have not already been added to the waitlist. If you are enrolled in the labs, please bring your lab manual to the first lab. The manual may be purchased from Associated Students (by the UCEN). TA: Nathan Thaler Email: nathan .thaler@lifesci.ucsb.edu Office: Psych 3221 Office Hours: Thur. 2:15 to 3:15 and by appointment EXAMS Midterm exam 1 Tues July 6 Section A 100 pts Midterm exam 2 Mon July 19 Section B 100 pts Final Exam Fri July 30 Cumulative (all lectures) 150 pts 4 to 7 pm Total: 350 pts The Final Exam will cover all of Section C lectures (100 pts) and material from both Section A and Section B lectures (25 pts each). An opportunity to earn extra credit points by taking online quizzes for the genetics portion of the class will be announced later. Missed MCDB 1A Exams: If you miss an exam due to illness or emergency, contact me within 24 hours . Make-up exams are permitted only if you provide written verification of the illness or emergency. Very Important: No early exams Three Primary Study Resources: 1) Text Book The text- Life, The Science of Biology by Sadava, Heller, Orians, Purves, and Hillis ( 8th Edition ) available at the bookstores. The Text is also available as an ebook to view on your computer (for details see the website: www.thelifewire.com/ebook ) 2) The course website https: //gauchospace.ucsb.edu The website will contain PowerPoint presentations of the slides presented in lecture. It will also contain, handouts, old exams, extra credit quizzes (for the genetics portion of the class) and other information that will help you study the material presented in lectures. To access the website, login using your UCSB net ID. Three Primary Study Resources: 3) Lectures: The importance of attending class cannot be over-emphasized Study consistently!!!!
