Mr. Brian Westerman is a sales associate at Target retail store in Dothan, Alabama. Mr.
Westerman has given me permission to conduct this interview. This interview was conducted on
May 19, 2010.
I would like to thank him for sharing his story with the faculty, student body of
the University of Phoenix, and myself.
In addition, Mr. Westerman was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 10, 1974. Mr.
Westerman grew up not knowing who his dad was. He was raised by his mother only, until she
married his stepdad, Mr. Westerman was ten years old at the time. He became so close to his
stepdad that he started calling him dad. Everything was going great until Brian became 15 years
old, then his relationship started to change with his stepdad. The relationship started to go down
the drain, so to speak, his stepdad was starting to get over demanding, and extremely jealous of
Brian spending any time with his mom.
Additionally, Mr. Westerman has often wondered about his dad, asking his mom questions
about him all the time. She saw how the relationship was going with her son and her husband she
gave Brian the information to find his dad, that’s how Brian ended up in Dothan, Alabama. He
came to get to know his dad in June, 2006. He moved in with his dad and his grandmother.
However, Brian did not bond with his dad like he always dreamed of. His dad was caring at
first, until the new wore off according to Brian Westerman. They started to have a relationship
where they just didn’t get along. Brian didn’t want to go back to St. Louis because he had formed
a resentment towards his mom, because he felt like she took his stepdad’s side and decided to
send him to Dothan, to get him out of her hair, so to speak. This has caused Brian to be more of a
person who keeps to himself, and has no social life.
