Projectile Motion and Velocity October 19, 2010 Performed by: Matt Le, Ben Landry, Ben Knutson, and Andrew Cumming TA Name: Abdul Naseer Malmi Kakkada The problem in this lab was to determine whether or not the horizontal component of the object’s velocity changed during its flight when you throw it up in the air in a parabolic toss. What this lab is trying to show us is that there is no acceleration in the x- direction when you throw the ball in the air. In this lab we used a baseball, a stopwatch, a meter stick, a video camera, and a computer that was equipped with video analysis software. We collected data by throwing the ball in the area, and measuring the height of the ball when it reached its peak. Also we timed the duration of the throw, and measured the horizontal distance that the ball traveled. To predict the motion of the ball we used two different equations. One equation describes the x direction, which is , and the other equation describes the motion in the y- direction, which is . The second part of the prediction asks us if the horizontal component of the object’s velocity changes during its flight. With the exception of the initial force that is exerted on the ball by the person throwing it, there is no force acting on the ball in the horizontal direction. Since we know that there isn’t any force acting on the object, in the x-direction then we also know that there is no acceleration in the x-
