Give a possible sample space for this problem. How many points are in the sample space? For each letter we have a choice of 4 different mailboxes so the sample space is S  1,1,1 , 1,1,2 ,....... 4,4,4  denoting the mailbox number for each of the three letters. There are 4 3 points in S . ( 2 ) b . Find the probability that the first mailbox is empty. There are 3 3 ways of distributing the letters in mailboxes 2,3, and 4. There are 4 3 ways of distributing the letters in all four boxes. Therefore the probability mailbox 1 is empty is 3 3 4 3 ( 2 ) c . Find the probability that no mailbox contains more than one letter.
