P a g e | 3 May 15, 2000 I was sitting at my grandmother’s house helping her to do our family tree. When we started talking about the declaration of Independence and she was telling me about my ethnicity. She said, “Did you know that you are one fourth Irish?” I was truly unaware of these, I did know that I was Italian seeing as my last name was Prario. But Irish, that came from out of left field. I told her that I was proud to tell people that I was Italian, after all the Italian people make some really great food! As our conversation continued she told me that there were many great men in American history that were of Irish Origin. Nine of the men who signed The Declaration of Independence were of Irish origin. In 1776, roughly 300,000 Irish people came into the United States, and many of them helped American win the war for their independence (America, 1991). I then become more interested in what my grandmother was saying. She went on with, “In 1845 the Great Potato Famine began in Ireland (Killen, 1995) and because times were so rough there, people began to come to America. They came to America in hopes that their families and children would be able to live a long and happy life filled with opportunity. After all
